Cultural Studies courses provided by the HKUSPACE laid a solid foundation for my advanced academic pursuit. Courses in popular culture, city branding, the relationship between gender and society, heritage and tourism strengthened my academic foundation of cultural theories and inspired me to view everyday life, politics, and discourse from multiple perspectives. This interdisciplinary way of thinking is what I wish to develop in Global Creative Industries.

During the two-year study at SPACE, what I gained most was advice from lecturers. Especially cultural domain lecturers, they are willing to discuss with your points of your assignments or even listen to you with your problems. A school life is never only acquiring knowledge, but also building up relationships.

MCS exposes me to a new and critical approach to popular culture and daily practices. The concepts are not difficult to understand if you could pay attention to the lectures and try to apply them in any cultural phenomenon.  Keep thinking and questioning the things around you outside the lecture!

I always believe life is a perpetual struggle. However, I was puzzled for what is the uncertain power that I am opposing to. The courses have provided me the answer and it is ideologies. The programme has given me entirely new angles in viewing the world with theories of postmodernism, and has inspired me to rethink my whole life in various aspects just like the formation of my identities and gender.

My gain in SPACE is beyond expectation because the new challenges I encountered here had forced me to grow up. There are always paths to our destinations and though it may not be the way people agree with, it sure will be the best if we are determined about it.

As a business and science student in secondary education, I had never thought of studying in arts fields. I think it is essential to discover and choose a programme based on our own interests in tertiary education so we will gain plenty of enjoyment but not anxieties in future.

HKU SPACE CC has been a great place for me to obtain knowledge about our everyday life. Our daily practices have their own origin, and everything that seems normal is actually ideological. What I learned here is the way to uncover hidden meanings behind these practices. I am pretty sure you will see the world in a completely different perspective, and what you usually see every day will never be the same after studying here.

  • 2014 HKU - Bachelor of Arts & Bachelor of Education in English
  • Other offer received: HKIEd BA (Language Studies) & BEd (English Language)

I would say the benefits that I have gained from HKU SPACE CC are maturity and critical thinking. In Media and Cultural Studies, I have come across the relevant ideologies and concepts, and all these have made me become more sensitive to our surrounding world. Personality wise, I turned out to be very determined on striving for goals, since the keen competition at CC can get pretty fierce and tough sometimes. All these as highlighted above are actually priceless skills and mindsets that I have gained throughout my previous Associate Degree’s level studies.

Cultural studies had been my favourite university subject since secondary school. However, I got unsatisfactory public examination results so I gave up the idea for a period of time. Entering CC reignited my hope and I never thought that my dream would come true after two-year of study here. I acquired knowledge from different scopes, which I did not learn from the previous education. Also, the peers and lecturers in CC provided me with great support.

At CC, not only has my academic ability been improved a lot, but also my social circle has expanded. I got my best friend ever here. I am able to manage skill of visualization, basic knowledge in contemporary creative industry and media and culture theory, which help a great deal in my degree studies.

My experiences in HKU SPACE CC equipped me to adapt to university life. Not only did the courses provide me with good foundation of concepts and knowledge, but the projects also trained my critical thinking and increased my social awareness. Being well-prepared for university life, I have more time and ability to explore my limits; for example joining exchange programmes and field trips, and participating in community research. I am grateful that I have met and worked with inspiring lecturers and professors.
